Have you always wondered about strawbale construction? Heard it is only for hot and dry climates? Think again! With their combination of insulation and thermal mass, plastered strawbale walls can be perfect for cold – and even wet – climates if they are designed and built according to a set of time tested principles. This course balances sessions in the classroom and on a demonstration project so you will learn to think your way through a bale house while gaining a feel for the nature of straw, clay and lime as building materials.

That’s right, I’m offering another FREE plastering workshop in Jacksonville, Oregon. Many of you have taken workshops from me in the past and you know that because lime plaster requires a curing period of about 10 days, there’s no way for us to plaster beyond the scratch coat in the workshops. That’s why this FREE workshop is so important. We won’t be doing any scratch coat work in this workshop. For those of you who have not had the experience of scratch coat plastering, I’m happy to talk you through the process and give you some tips and techniques. That said, the focus of this workshop will be the two coats I can’t show you in my comprehensive straw bale workshops: the brown and finish coats.
In this workshop we will cover the following aspects of plastering:
1. Lime plaster mixing ratios
2. Proper tool list introduction
3. Mixing techniques
4. Lime plaster lifecycle discussion
5. Application techniques including hand application and spraying
6. Brown coat floating techniques
7. Finish coat techniques
8. Window and door protection details
9. and much, much more…
When: July 31 – Aug 1 (2 days only)
Where: Jacksonville, Oregon
Cost: FREE!
Details: Camping, bathroom facilities and shower are provided. No meals are included in the workshop.

Henry Beston noted how the hand-made thing has the mark of the living soul. This course will teach you how to create and apply beautiful hand finished plasters and paints on many wall surfaces. People around the world have been using clay, gypsum, and lime as plasters and paints for millenia, and these materials have shown a timeless aesthetic and utility. The course will cover at a basic level three principle plaster and paint mediums: clay, lime, and gypsum, and finish with plaster coats, paints, and washes of clay, lime, casein, wheat paste, mica, pigments, and other natural ingredients. Students will leave this course with practical experience mixing and applying a wide variety of finishes on various wall systems, from rough straw bale to finished gypsum wall board. Emphasis will be given on learning the working properties of the materials and developing critical thinking skills to apply the knowledge in real-world situations, rather than on specific recipes for specific conditions.

Cynthia Grier of EcoLogic Life, and Carolyn Marie and Jack Stephens of Wild Earth Village Builders, are providing a FREE educational presentation on these environmentally safe and healthy options for home and office remodels, renovations and new building projects. Natural plasters protect walls from wind, rain and fire. They provide a beautiful, durable and non-toxic finish for interiors and exteriors that revive old world traditions from Tuscany to Tokyo.
Learn how these ancient methods have been continued in modern Europe and Asia. Discover how limestone comes from the earth, is transformed into plasters, applied on walls and turns back into limestone. Learn how clays from our own soils can be transformed into finishes with beautiful colors and rich, sensuous textures. Lime and clay plasters can even be sculpted or carved to enhance artistic expression. Earthen plasters are easy and fun to work with, easy to clean up, simple to repair and are completely recyclable too!
This presentation will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2009, 5:30-7:00pm at the EcoLogic Life at 109 S. Montgomery St. in Ojai. This event is FREE to the public. The following Saturday, August 15th, the three presenters will be teaching a hands-on workshop in Meiners Oaks (http://nbnetwork.org/2800).
