This is our most intensive hands-on class of the summer. Cob, the traditional earthen building technique of the British Isles, has been reborn on both sides of the Atlantic. In this country it is famous for its whimsical forms and artistic expressiveness. This class will provide students with an in-depth feel for various ways to mix and apply cob, and will include earth-appropriate carpentry and roof structures.

Learn basic skills needed to frame a house and to realize your own
carpentry projects of any size. This is a hands-on class designed to
develop your skills in layout, cutting and assembly by practicing on
real projects, including building a deck, a picnic table, and a stud
frame wall. Starting with safety considerations, you will learn to use
hand and power tools, to select the right fasteners for the job, and to
understand the forces that act on wooden structures. The last day of the
class will be an introduction to framing with unmilled round poles.
Class size is limited to 8 to ensure a high instructor-student ratio.

Experience the romance of hand tools and learn the ancient craft of traditional timber framing in a spectacular setting with an acclaimed craftsman.
While staying in beautiful north Idaho, meeting and sharing with lots of interesting people, and eating some of the best grub you’ve had, students will learn the fundamentals of building a timber frame with traditional hand tools. During the day we will lay out and cut joinery, assemble the frame and have a fun filled hand raising.In the evening we will cover drafting and other fundamentals of house building, watch slides, visit a local project and check out cool tools, stoke fires, share good beer, and be merry.are intoxicated with the joy of making things.

Spirit Pine Sanctuary. We will construct a salvage wood and clay-straw structure to store farm equipment, animal feed and house a small tool shop. You will learn the basics of framing, post and beam building, learn to construct with wooden pallets and the infill technique called “light-clay straw” or “slip-straw”. Over the last two decades, the historic craft of timberframing in residential construction has experienced a revival. Students will learn the fundamentals of designing and constructing a timberframe using mortise and tenon joinery. Layout techniques, tool use and sharpening, and joinery cutting methods are taught as we work on a small timberframe project. Evening lectures will address the history of the craft, finishing techniques, and mechanical systems for timberframe houses. We will also touch on frame design, joinery choices, and integration of frame and house design. This course will focus on traditional hand-cut joinery and tools and will also demonstrate some of the power tools used by modern timberframers. The November, January and April classes have an extra day and will raise their structure on Saturday. The September class is 5 days and will raise their structure on Friday.
